‘Tell me you’re not pinning everything on this. A dare? Callum!’ The minute he’d reluctantly left home to go to Lewis and Migs’s for the night, they were on him. He was in a mood already having to leave her, but for the plan to work, and work well, he needed to leave her there. Like he had done that first time, after snogging her face off on the doorstep. He’d nursed an erection the whole car journey. God, she’d felt good. It felt even better than the first time. When he’d finally pulled away, leaving her breathless, he could see the night apart would be worth it. She was under no illusions now about what heat the two of them could spark within the other. So far, so good. Migs continued to earbash him, talking about all the things that could go wrong. ‘You know how stubborn she is. Was. Is! She’s Alice 2020 version, remember? What if it freaks her out too much? Oh my days I need a drink.’

‘Not a chance, sorry.’ Lewis shot his wife an apologetic look. She flipped him off. ‘She’s got a point, Cal. I know my sis. She’s like a hedgehog when she feels threatened.’

‘I had to do something! She wanted to check into a hotel. You just said how stubborn she gets; how prickly she is when she thinks she’s being managed. I needed her to stay with me, with us!’

Migs tried to haul herself off the large, overstuffed cream leather sofa, but gave up, reaching for the family-sized bar of chocolate instead. ‘I know, but, Callum, that’s madness. What if it doesn’t work?’

‘Yes!’ Lewis, who had been stuttering and pacing, clambered onto his wife’s point, sitting down on the arm of the sofa and dropping a kiss on her head. The beer bottle he was swinging around fizzed up, and a shower of foamy beer sprang up over his fingers.

‘Yes! My beautiful wife is right! What if it doesn’t work?’ Lewis’s face paled. ‘You can’t move in here! We’ve got enough on our plate.’

‘Lewis!’ Migs slapped him. ‘Of course he could live here, but he doesn’t need to. He lives with Alice, where he belongs.’ She pointed a long finger at Callum, who was wearing a line into her hearth rug. He couldn’t help it. His mind was working overtime after that kiss goodbye. He wished he was there now. Leaving her alone in that big house, when she didn’t remember half of the stuff in it, worried him. It felt alien for him not to be there. Nowhere had ever quite felt like home, till that house. With her.

‘It’s going to work, but I think you’re mad. It’s a big deal if this doesn’t work, Cal.’

‘Yeah.’ Lewis took another swig of beer, his face dropping when he saw it was near empty. ‘Beer?’

‘Yeah,’ he said, not caring either way. I’d rather be back in my own house, my own bed. With my girl, swigging champagne in bed. Messing about under the covers.
